Owen Kirker Clifford Stephens is a full-time freelance game writers, developer, publisher, and consultant. He has served as co-creator of the Star Wars Saga Roleplaying Game, Starfinder Design Lead for Paizo, the Freeport and Pathfinder developer for Green Ronin Publishing, a consultant and developer for Rite Publishing, and is the the owner and publisher of Rogue Genius Games (with stores on DriveThruRPG and Open Gaming Store).
Born in 1970 in Norman, Oklahoma Owen was introduced to gaming by his uncle in 1979 and was instantly hooked. His first professional efforts were all accepted by publishers that went bankrupt before his work could be published. Perseverance eventually paid off, and his professional game-writing career began in the late 1990s. He went on to write for projects such as Star Wars Roleplaying Game Saga Edition, multiple editions of Dungeons & Dragons, two editions of Pathfinder, Starfinder, EverQuest RPG, Black Company RPG, Wheel of Time RPG, Thieves’ World RPG, The Guide to Absalom and other Pathfinder RPG books.
In 2010 in addition to his freelance career, he became the Lead Developer for Super Genius Games. In this role he wrote or oversaw the release of a new product a week, every week, for four years, without a break. In 2013 Owen left Super Genius Games to start his own game company, Rogue Genius Games (with the official permission of SGG to use such a similar name). Later in 2013 Owen became the Pathfinder Developer for Green Ronin, which began with overseeing producing of a new Pathfinder-compatible version of Freeport, as well as an updated version of the popular Advanced Bestiary.
In early 2014, Owen accepted a job offer to become the an on-staff developer for Paizo, creators of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. In April of 2014 Owen and his wife moved from Norman, Oklahoma to the Seattle area. In 2017, he title changed to Starfinder Design Lead. In 2019 he left Paizo, and soon became the Fantasy AGE Developer at Green Ronin. In 2022, he served as Editor-In-Chief for Evil Genius Games, and helped prepare the release of their core rulebook for Everyday Heroes.
He currently resides in Norman, and focuses on this blog and his own game products.
I don’t know how else to reach you Mr Stephens so I’m trying here and hopefully not in vain. I have a question about the Magister that I hope you can answer, “I’d like to ask the author about the Mystic Accuracy ability, can the magister select himself as a target to be excluded if the Spell in question is a Emanation spell that emanates from him?
Example: Can a Magister use this ability with Antimagic Field to make himself able to cast magic while under the effect of his own Antimagic Field?”
This is my question?
Answered at the Paizo thread!
Hi Owen!
I just saw your video this morning over at Kotaku that recounted your Star Wars Demo for the “Lieutenant, the Lady and the Two Teens.” I’ve probably rewatched it a half-dozen times so far today, gleefully giggling as I’m showing it to friends and co-workers.
I just wanted to say thank you for sharing.
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I was very sad to hear of you leaving Paizo, but mostly for the selfish reason that I enjoyed every moment of Qundle. THANK YOU! Your play got me hooked on Oblivion Oath and time will tell whether it’s gonna keep me without – I haven’t had the heart to go on yet.
I wish you all the best for this new portion(?) of life in Indiana and will be on the look-out for if I come across any of your products!

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve left Twitter, so you’ll have to reach me by my e-mail address or on Discord. Still waiting on your feedback on the 5E Time Thief.
Hey there, Owen.
Three things:
1) Just bought the Wolfshead for PF1E, its a fun little class and great usage of the word ambuscade. I’ll have to see if I can run it at my table soon.
2) I am the treasurer of The RPG Creators Relief Fund. IT could be an extra bit of money to help with medical bills. You may have already been pointed in our direction but we want to help.
3) I also do conversions of content to Fantasy Grounds to give you an extra little income stream. If you’re interested let me know and I get get some stuff converted and submitted. (Like the Wolfshead which I want for myself anyway)
Connor,
I’ll turn to the RPGCRF if I need to, but I am *hoping* to do enough fundraising I can leave the Fund for other RPG creators who need it more than I do.
I’d LOVE to get some Fantasy grounds conversions! Please, drop me a line at owen.stephens@gmail.com.
